Manifesto for Meads Ward Eastbourne

• FOOD POVERTY The UK is the sixth richest country on earth, yet 8 million people in the UK struggle to put food on the table. Councils can do a lot to tackle hunger and promote the wider concept of food justice from tackling holiday hunger to supporting local foodbanks, to promoting community growing projects and co-operative allotments.
• END TRANSPORT INEQUALITY Some areas of Meads are missed off the map by commercial providers and community transport and services such as dial- a- ride can be a lifeline. Access to transport ensures people have an affordable way to travel to school, work, and shops and can access other vital services tackling social and economic exclusion
• TAKE A STAND AGAINST MODERN SLAVERY This is happening in Eastbourne right under our noses in nail bars, car washes, factories and restaurants. Make sure Eastbourne council is one of the over 80 councils which have signed the Co-op Charter Against Modern Slavery
• CORPORATE TAX AVOIDANCE Billions are missing from our public purse because some companies choose to avoid tax. Not only does this mean less money for vital services, but also that local business can’t compete because it’s not a level playing field. Promoting the Fair Tax Mark is one way to empower consumers to shop with those who pay their share.
• COMMUNITY ENERGY SCHEMES community energy enables people to come together to control where their energy comes from, contribute to sustainable future, generate local benefit for their neighbourhood, and create jobs and retraining opportunities for local people.
• ACCESSIBILITY IN EASTBOURNE A recent access day at the Beacon in Eastbourne showed how difficult it is to get around. Lets make it more disabled friendly in this town
• PROMOTE CREDIT UNIONS 7 million people lack access to a bank account. Without mainstream finance, low income families can struggling with ordinary living costs such as repairing a washing machine or buying uniforms. Credit unions are a financial co-operative, owned by members that offer fairer financial services for their members. I invest in my credit union, will you?
