There are 12 Unions affiliated to the Labour Party.
“The Labour Party was formed out of the trade union movement to give working people their own political voice. The link from the workplace to the party through the affiliated trade unions is what makes it unique to this day. This link is more important than ever as we work together to tackle the urgent problems we face as a country, from stagnating wages to failing public services”.
The affiliated unions are:-
ASLEF – Associated Society of Locomotive Engineers (railways – drivers, operational supervisors and staff);
BFAWU – Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union – food industry; Community – Industries in and around steel, metal and textile communities;
CWU –Communication Workers Union;
FBU – Fire Brigades Union – firefighters and other workers within fire and rescue services;
GMB – For general workers in public and private sectors;
MU – Musicians Union – performers, writers and teachers in the music industry;
NUM – National Union of Mineworkers;
TSSA – Transport Salaried Staffs’ Association – railways, London Underground, travel, haulage, shipping;
UNISON – The public service union for all those providing services to the public whether employed in the public, private or voluntary sectors;
Unite – For general workers in the public and private sectors;
USDAW – Union of Shop, Distributive and Allied Workers – retail, distributive and related industries.
Here in Eastbourne the unions are well represented in the Constituency Labour Party on the Executive Committee.
The EC comprises:-
7 statutory officers i.e. the Chair, Vice Chair membership, Vice Chair (campaigns), Secretary, Treasurer, Women’s Officer and the Policy Officer.
Plus in our CLP we have added 3 extra officers i.e. Youth Officer; Equalities Officer; and Trade Union Liaison Officer (TULO).
Also on the EC is a Cooperative Party representative and the Election Agent.
And, in our CLP we have included 9 additional lay members on to the EC:- 4 branch reps, an additional Women’s Coordinator and 4 union reps. (A Unite Community Rep from the Unite Community Eastbourne Group is included amongst these 4).
Unite Community Eastbourne Group is an active group. We are involved in campaigning and holding events and in joining alongside Labour and other local groups. Including:- Workers Memorial Day street stall with the Trades Council; Universal Credit training event with Eastbourne Citizen’s Advice (open to all Labour Party members); Trades Council stall at Eastbourne Pride; collecting surveys at the Job Centre about people’s experience of being on Universal Credit; working with the Eastbourne Women’s Forum and Eastbourne People’s Assembly to hold information street stalls on the NHS, homelessness, education cuts, Police funding cuts and; National Campaign Days on Stop and Scrap Universal Credits; the People not Profit March in Brighton 13th October 2018.
