Eastbourne #YouthStrike4Climate

This local group is part of an international movement of school students who take time off school to demand action to prevent further global warming and climate change. The movement began on August 2018 after Swedish schoolgirl Greta Thunberg protested outside the Swedish Parliament (Riksdag) holding a sign “School strike for the climate”. From there it grew to the first global strike on 15th March 2019, with more than 1 million strikers across 125 countries. A second global strike on 24th May 2019 saw 1600 strikes events across 150 countries.

Eastbourne Extinction Rebellion

This local group is part of the UK and global movement that uses civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action to compel government action to avoid tipping points in climate change, biodiversity loss and the risk of social and ecological collapse.

XR makes 3 demands. 1) The Government must tell the truth about the climate and wider ecological emergency, reverse inconsistent policies and work alongside the media to communicate with citizens.2) Act Now. The Government must enact legally binding policy measures to reduce carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and to reduce consumption levels. 3) A national Citizen’s Assembly to oversee the changes, as part of creating a democracy fit for purpose.

All are welcome to attend the regular meetings where you can find out more. The group takes local action and supports the wider XR actions e.g. recently 20 plus local members joined in the 2 weeks of demonstrations in London – October 2019.
