Thousands of people facing homelessness will be supported by a new £84 million cash injection to councils up and down the country ahead of winter, including £9.6m in the South East. Children and families in temporary accommodation will be prioritised – with the funding to go towards helping families to cover the essentials like food, school travel and laundry. The new funding, which will support children to remain in education, will be announced on World Homeless Day |
More specialist teachers in schools |

The government has made real progress to fix the foundations of education. Attendance is up, with five million fewer days of absence this year compared to last. Teacher recruitment and retention is also up, with over 2,300 more teachers in secondary and special schools across England. Now, talented people with the potential to become brilliant teachers are being offered bursaries and scholarships worth up to £31,000 to train to teach chemistry, maths, physics, and computing. They’ll help to boost outcomes for young people across the South East. |
Major homebuying overhaul to save time and money |

The biggest shakeup to the homebuying system in this country’s history has been proposed to speed up the drawn-out process of buying a home by four weeks, saving people time, stress and money – around £710 for first-time buyers. Under the new proposals, sellers and estate agents would have to provide buyers with vital information about a property upfront, including the home’s condition, any leasehold costs, and chains of people waiting to move. Binding contracts could also be introduced earlier in the buying process, helping halve the number of failed transactions. India trade trip secures over 10,000 jobs |

10,600 new UK jobs have been unlocked during the Prime Minister’s visit to India this week, including nearly 800 here in the South East. The Prime Minister also promised to open doors for British businesses in India, following the signing of the ambitious UK-India trade deal in July. This will lower tariffs on British goods being imported into India and mean trade is quicker, cheaper and easier |
Thousands more homes and businesses protected from flooding |

This government inherited flood defences in the worst condition on record. Since being elected, they have delivered 151 flood defence schemes protecting more than 24,000 homes, schools, hospitals and businesses across the country, including over 9,000 here in the South East. This includes the Pevensey Bay Sea Defences in East Sussex, which has better protected 3,225 properties. |
